Attended a SMU business school interview today and here’s what i learnt. People with upcoming interviews, this may be a good read.

1. Don’t bother preparing.

The topic we got was not related to business at all. It was a social issue. There is no point in trying to predict the topic. If you want to prepare something, the most you can do is to prepare your self introduction. My group’s profs asked us to give additional details about our life. For example, what we are doing now (work/intern), our hobbies.

2. Treat the people in your group with respect.

We were asked to write down our names on a piece of paper so the profs can call on us easily. At this point, take the initiative to help hand out the paper and marker. It is a friendly gesture and may get others in the group to be more open and friendly with you. This may work to your advantage later.

3. Profs are chill, don’t be afraid to have a discussion with them.

Personally, I picked off from a point one of the profs mentioned to support my argument and we continued to have a back and forth conversation. For nervous wreaks out there, imagining that you are talking to a friend.

4. Always remain calm.

SMU places great emphasis on their interactive pedagogy. The purpose of the discussion style interview is to see how well you can hold a conversation and give different perspectives. The calmer you are, the better you speak and this increases the likelihood of the interviewers liking you.

5. Leave a good last impression.

Shake the profs’ hands before leaving and say something nice. Like ‘see you soon’ or ‘thank you for your time’. It always feels nice to be appreciated and these profs are people too.

All the best everyone!

Edit: I made it into SMU business!
